HANDS-FREE EXPERIENCE.

THE FIN DRIVE ALLOWS FOR A HANDS-FREE KAYAK FISHING EXPERIENCE

Focus your attention on getting your bait out in the water, and when the time comes, reel in that monster!

The Mahi Mahi is a trophy fish found in temperate, tropical, and subtropical waters around the world, and just like its namesake, the Vanhunks Mahi Mahi sit on top Fin Drive System kayak loves the same conditions.

The removable Fin Drive System is straightforward to use, allowing you to reach top speeds in no time and maintain momentum when you are moving, which frees up your hands when trawling. The easy-to-install Fin Drive System works on a push action making for natural movement for most people. The Mahi Mahi is a smooth ride and takes little effort to get it moving. The fin drive navigates the Kayak forward, and with the quiet propulsion of the Fin Drive, the fish will not hear you coming and will still allow you the element of surprise. Kayak paddles produce splash and generate noise, but with the Fin Drive you will not experience as much noise and disturbance, giving you a stealthy advantage over your next catch.

A one-handed rudder control allows for easy maneuvering. The rudder system is integrated with the design of the bottom of the hull so no need to worry about obstacles that can damage your rudder. The rudder is secure and horizontally aligned under the kayak.

The superior stability of the kayak makes it great for fishing. You can cast while you are standing up and not worry about the boat tipping or you falling off. Finding the perfect ratio between weight and balance meant we had to relook the length and width of this vessel. 11 feet in length and 34 inches in width, weighing in at 35kgs with the fin drive system and 32kgs without the fin drive system, we believe we found the perfect weight to balance ratio. Less length means less weight to be peddled, yet the wide hull still secures plenty of storage space, which is ideal if you bag that big one.

The bottom of this vessel is complemented with a deep single ‘V’ shape in the front towards a double-V in the back for added stability and speed of water flow through the tail area. The hull is designed for superior stability, yet effortless forward propulsion.

Equipped with a round storage hatch between the paddler’s seat and the Fin Drive System, front storage, and rear storage system, and added room behind your seat, space will be no problem.

The Mahi Mahi is kitted out with six horizontal molded rod placements and two integrated rod holders at the back. On either side of the paddler, the integrated tackle box storage compartments are molded into the design, and don’t forget the molded-in cup holder.

When it came to seating, we equipped the Mahi Mahi with an adjustable Aluminium seat on a slider system to move your position forward and backward without much effort, to ensure a comfortable pedal. When you’re out on the water all day, you need to be comfortable, the Vanhunks Mahi Mahi Fin Drive provides just that.

It’s spacious, and the raised padded seat ensures you’re not going to get soaked by any spray water pooling in the seating area. With ample room to move around, entry and exit is easy and so is gear access. Recline your seat for a laid back paddle position, or secure it more upright for moments when you need to make a dash forward quickly.

As an added feature, the Mahi Mahi has the functionality to easily mount a motor at the stern for when you want to get to your next secret spot quicker.

The motor will not interfere with your rudder system and no need to make adjustments to your steering system.

Do not want to add a Fin Drive System? No problem — a drive cover box is available. Simply remove the fin drive and the cover box fits into the open space. The box allows for additional storage while transforming your Mahi Mahi to a paddle kayak.

Overview

The kayak’s stability is excellent for fishing as it enables standing and casting without the risk of tipping over or falling. To achieve the optimal weight and balance ratio, we had to re-evaluate the vessel’s length and width, resulting in an 11-foot-long and 34-inch-wide kayak weighing 35kgs with the fin drive system and 32kgs without it. This weight allows for easy peddling due to its shorter length while still providing ample storage space for catching big fish.

KAYAK SPECIFICATIONS:

  • Length: 335 cm / 11 ft
  • Width: 86 cm / 34 inches
  • Height: 30 cm / 11 inches
  • Weight without drive: 32 kgs / 70 lbs
  • Weight with drive: 36 kgs / 79 lbs
  • Maximum Weight
  • Capacity: 185 kgs / 407 lbs
  • I see there is a rudder system, can I connect the pedals and the hand rudder at the same time?

Unfortunately, not. The rudder system is designed to work individually as if both were connected and both paddlers try to operate the steering at the same time it could badly damage the rudder system set up inside of the kayak.

  • I don’t have solid roof racks, what can I do?

The Zambezi is a lightweight kayak in comparison to a lot of other models so you can make use of temporary racks such as the Self Inflating racks or the Rubber racks. These are both perfect solutions but keep in mind that traveling faster than 100kms per hour or in high winds can affect the temporary racks’ ability to secure the kayak so keep to the speed limit and they will work perfectly.

  • Can I easily transport the kayak?

The Zambezi is not a difficult kayak to move as it only weighs 28kgs and measures 10ft in length, however, the Zambezi has high walls and is quite wide which could add a little difficulty to the initial lift. There are however Dollys that can make your loading and offload much simpler. By installing the Kayak Load Roller on your rear window you can easily roll your Zambezi up onto your roof racks. The load roller is attached with two very strong suction cups to the rear window and once attached lift the nose of the kayak onto the roller and pick up the tail and slide the kayak onto your racks.

  • Should I take out or leave the scupper plugs in?

Due to its shape and the fact that it has high walls the scupper plug tubes are long and do not allow any water to return so taking them out would not be a problem at all. By removing the scuppers completely, you would guarantee quick drainage from the deck which would be a lot better than possible water damming.

  • Can I beach launch with the Zambezi?

That would depend entirely on the condition at the launch. If the swell is small and the water conditions calm then a beach launch is entirely possible but large swell and choppy conditions would greatly affect the Zambezi and make the launch uncomfortable.

  • Am I limited to where I can go on the Zambezi?

No not at all, The Zambezi works well in all waterways from Rivers to open seas.

  • Can I mount a motor on the back of the kayak?

The design of the Zambezi doesn’t allow for a rear-mounted motor but you can use set up a Side motor mount which allows for the motor to be attached behind you by using the pre-molded bar mounting or easier still you can remove the Toolbox and install an E-box which fits in perfectly and this attachment and allows for an electric motor to be mounted directly in front of you for easy control.

  • Should I want to at some point upgrade my Zambezi what drive option could I use?

Our drive box designs on the Fin Drive and the Prop Drive allow for both to fit perfectly into the Zambezi by simply unscrewing the toolbox clips and removing the toolbox. Then insert the drive you want to use and away you pedal. Please ensure that you fasten the drive box clips securely as if the clips and the box are not secure then this will greatly affect the performance of the drives.

  • Can I adjust the seating forward and back?

Yes, the seating is adjustable forward and back by unscrewing the seat slider clips and moving the seat into the required position, and then fastening the Slider clips to secure the seat into position.

  • I see there is a Fishfinder compartment, how would you install that?

Under the kayak, there is a nylon slated protection plate that can be easily unscrewed. When you lift off the lid you will see four brass inserts and these are used to mount your transducer to the kayak. Once you have mounted the transducer you can run your cables up through the fish finder scupper port and onto the deck. Close the protection plate as this will ensure the longevity of the transducer beam. You can then decide when you want to mount your LCD screen and place your small lithium battery pack. A great place for the LCD is a rail mounting on the accessory rail as it is out of the way should you want to remove the Toolbox and replace it with one of the drive systems.

  • Would I be able to stand and fish on the Zambezi?

The hull shape and design of the Zambezi allow for incredible balance so yes you can stand and fish. The wide shape of the kayak and deep channels under the kayak allows the water to flow easily through the kayak’s hull and this aids in creating added balance and stability.

  • How fast is the kayak?

The average paddling speed is around 4.2 km an hour. The design and shape of the kayak allow for the kayak to glide easily through the water which makes the Zambezi nice and nippy but due to its design being based around stability, the wider shape tends to slow the kayak slightly.

Care

  • Always store kayak in a shaded area and out of direct sunlight.
  • Do not hang your kayak through the handles.
  • Store your kayak on the side with the weight evenly displaced.
  • Do not tie or try to secure your kayak through the handles.
  • To avoid warping, ensure your kayak’s weight displacement is even during storage.
  • Do not over tighten your kayak, especially in hot conditions as this can distort your kayak’s shape.
